The Edinburgh Tattoo

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has nothing to do with the art of skin painting, and everything to do with showcasing the music, dance, and precision of performers from around the world, with a particular focus of course on military bands.

This being Scotland, pipes and drummers feature heavily, but there are musical instruments and performances of all types – we’ve seen everything from a youth motorcycle team to a New Zealand pipe band at the Edinburgh Tattoo.

100 Million viewers:

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the maximum watched of all the Edinburgh festivals, with nearly 100 million people tuning in to watch it on TV.

Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets can be purchased online, or in-person in Edinburgh at the box office. There’s a show every night for much of August, but it’s definitely worth purchasing in advance to be sure you get the date that you want as many sell out.

The performances are fantastic, the music is usually a mix of classic and modern, and the ceremony and co-ordination of all the performers are world-class.

A highlight, of course, is the Lone Piper playing on the walls of Edinburgh Castle, which makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Hopefully, you really impressed by the New Zealand contribution, which featured a projected dragon and the Lord of the Rings theme music.

Salute:

At the end of each show, the Finale brings onto the Esplanade all the performers from that night’s event for a climax that includes the taking of the salute. Participants then march down Castle hill to embark on coaches that take them back to their barracks before the spectators follow them.

Tips for attending the Edinburgh Festivals in August:

Having gone through the five major August festivals, you must have to go through just a few tips to help you get the most from your festival experience in Edinburgh.

First, and this should be quite obvious from the post, just remember that you don’t need to limit yourself to just one festival when you’re visiting Edinburgh during August!

Many people focus on the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, but there are four other festivals going on throughout the month, and taking the time to check out some of those during your visit.

Our next tip would be to plan for the weather to be, well, variable. Scotland is relatively far north, and whilst you do get sunny and warm days in August, these are by no means guaranteed, and temperatures can vary from 10C – 30C (50F – 86F).

It can also rain pretty much anytime, and if you’re attending a night time performance of the Edinburgh Tattoo in particular, which is in a fairly exposed spot, you need to be prepared for most eventualities.

Our suggestion would be to dress in layers, carry a small poncho, and just roll with whatever Scotland decides to throw at you.

When is the Edinburgh Tattoo and the other Edinburgh Festivals?
Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Our third tip would be to leave yourself plenty of time to get from venue to venue. Central Edinburgh is very walkable, so getting around on foot is going to be your best option, but be aware that the crowds of people can make this process a little slower than you might otherwise imagine.

If you learn some of the city shortcuts, and in particular the closes that run off the Royal Mile, you can save yourself some time, and if possible, try to avoid the congested areas.

Our last tip is around the accommodation. Edinburgh gets seriously busy in August, and hotel occupancy can be as high as 97%, with rates much higher than the rest of the year. In fact, finding accommodation can be such a challenge, that it’s worth breaking it out into its own section. So, here’s a guide on:

How to Find Accommodation during the Edinburgh Festivals:

If you’re looking for a specific kind of hotel or room type, then you definitely need to book as far in advance as possible, because rooms sell out a long time in advance for the August festival season. If you’re more flexible, then you will have more choice, but you definitely need to plan in advance nonetheless.

Here is good news for foreign visitors, that there are plenty of options for accommodation in August. A good many of Edinburgh’s residents actually leave the city and put their properties up on different sites.

Another option is to get a place a minute outside the city center. There are a number of satellite towns around Edinburgh with a 30 – 45 minutes public transport connection, where you might find better value options.

When is the Edinburgh Tattoo and the other Edinburgh Festivals?
The Edinburgh Tattoo 2020

Edinburgh public transport network is outstanding, and night buses often run into the early hours, so that is definitely an option if you’re looking to save money and don’t mind a bit of a “commute”.

Otherwise, we suggest the usual suspects for accommodation booking,The best way to find the finest deals on accommodation is Booking.com. they have the best range of properties and the most competitive prices. Please make sure that you plan in advance, and ready to pay more than you normally would for the August period.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual event produced by the British Armed Forces on the cobbled esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. Tattoo fans who want to join this iconic festival can buy Edinburgh Tattoo 2020 Tickets from our most consistent and unfailing online platform.

Every day of the week in the evening and twice on Saturdays, a wide range of moving performances by thousands of drummers, dancers, pipers, and musicians. However, the only show you won’t want to miss is the Massed Military Bands and Massed Pipes and Drums.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo placed an ad for unpaid roles
Edinburgh Tattoo

Since its inception in 1950 with only eight items featured in the program, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has become a large-scale event in which 220,000 people participate each year.

The showcase military event announced “an exciting opportunity for musicians to perform in a stage orchestra” in exchange for accommodation and meals only.

Now the Union of Musicians (MU) has called it “shocking” while the event’s bosses have pretended to expand the possibilities of playing.

“Our members rely on the performing arts as a vital source of income and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo sends a dangerous message that this highly skilled work is not worth much – even at such an important cultural event,” said Scottish UC organizer Caroline Sewell.

The exploitation of low-wage workers during the capital’s celebrations has become a growing concern for unions and activists.

Fair Fringe campaign:

The Fair Fringe campaign was launched in July 2017 with the aim of highlighting the “unfair and dangerous” conditions expected from many marginal workers.

Now in its 70th year, the Tattoo attracts more than 200,000 spectators on average each year on its race on the Castle Esplanade.

Six-figure sponsorship:

However, despite the announcement of a new six-figure sponsorship agreement with Edinburgh Airport, it emerged in February, the Edinburgh Tattoo placed an ad for unpaid roles.

The announcement indicated that it “opened” the event to traditional military musicians and invited groups of everyone from the age of 18.

Although “lay people” were encouraged to apply, the announcement stated that musicians must be able to perform at an “excellent level”.

The candidates were told that it was “better” to perform in a performance group, a pit orchestra or a musical theater group despite the lack of remuneration.

Although allowed to take on other paid tasks, candidates were asked to prioritize tattooing by making themselves available for a week of intense rehearsals as well as for shows.

Sewell said:

All volunteer musicians would be responsible for travel costs to Edinburgh, the announcement added, although food and accommodation will be provided for those living outside of the city. Sewell said it was “a serious concern” for the MU and urged tattoo heads to rethink.

She added: “It is nothing less than exploitation and we encourage our members and all the musicians not to accept this kind of work.”

The UM is campaigning against free work for professionals thanks to its Work Not Play campaign.

Where’s the Edinburgh Tattoo?

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place on the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle – arguably one of the most impressive castles in Britain. Edinburgh Castle is impressive at any time of the year, but it looks best when dressed in full military attire during the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo | It is the largest festival of its kind
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Edinburgh Castle is on a hill overseeing the city and is almost as impressive from a distance as up on your doorstep. Edinburgh Tattoo aside, any visit to Edinburgh at any time of the year should include a visit to the castle – especially for visitors to America and Canada who have far fewer castles than the majority of European countries.

How old is the Edinburgh Military Tattoo?

Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s very first dates back to 1950. The same year, Hollywood film producer Mike Todd (who was also Elizabeth Taylor’s fourth husband) made a documentary about the tattoo.

It started purely as a British military affair, but invitations were sent out in the years that followed. Not only was it more entertaining for spectators to see the different military performances, but it was a great way to forge and consolidate military alliances.

In 1952, the first non-British regiments participated in the Edinburgh Tattoo; this included regiments from the Netherlands, Canada, and France. In the 1960s, the event was televised and proved to be very popular around the world and in 1968, color people appeared on TVs.

Around 35% of the people who attend the Edinburgh Military Tattoo each year come from outside the UK. It is the biggest attraction for tourists wishing to enjoy the atmosphere, the visual spectacle and the range of musical performances.

Edinburgh’s military tattoo is different every year. Regular Scottish and British regiments vary their musical and drilling performances from year to year, and there are different guest regiments from different countries. Canada, the United States, and France are all common participants, and each country’s military brings with it its own style of music and military ceremony. In the 2018 Military Tattoo, the special guest regiment came from Japan.

It is the first time that the Japanese army takes part in the festivities. In addition to musical performances, with marches and other military ceremonies, you can also expect several spectacular fireworks during the tattoo throughout August.

Edinburgh is a city with over 3000 performances in 300 different places

Edinburgh is a city with fantastic locations, ranging from large concert halls to small theaters and each one offers amazing architecture inside. More than 3000 performances in 300 different places, it is very easy to mismanage your time during Edinburgh festivals. But, with a little planning, you can be sure to see everyone’s best pieces.

Here is a summary of the five different festivals in August.

The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo:

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been impressing crowds against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle for years, and the custom-built seats around the Castle Esplanade are impressive. Fans can buy Edinburgh Tattoo Tickets online.

Even more impressive is that the wind or the rain comes, the show has never been canceled! While the weather is unpredictable in Scotland, the show has always continued, and even if the rain falls, the fantastic atmosphere and the whole castle make up for it.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe:

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is probably the most famous of the five, which literally gives it control of the whole city. Performers from around the world bring their shows here and as long as they can find a place, they have a show.

With thousands of performers and shows from around the world, this mix of comedy, dance, acrobats and many other performing arts wows international crowds, from circus tents to underground crossroads.

For street performers, The Royal Mile is a central hub for action with, flyers and the chance to sample some of the performances as well as buy tickets at the official Fringe store.

The Fringe isn’t just limited to shows, many events and activities such as Silent Disco tours offer plenty of ways to keep you entertained while buzzing with breweries all over the city to help you enjoy the atmosphere.

Edinburgh International Book Festival:

When you think of a book festival, your mind is probably walking through a large bookstore where people drink cups of tea and exchange tips for the next read.

They have bookstores, three in fact, and they serve an average cup of tea, but there is so much more going on at Charlotte Square Gardens, the beautiful, generally closed square where the Book Festival takes place, that it really deserves to be part of your visit to Edinburgh in August.

You will have the opportunity to hear from many authors that you may not have heard of before reading segments of their books and sharing their passion behind it.

Edinburgh Art Festival:

Innumerable different forms make up the definition of art, and the lines can sometimes seem blurred through the five Edinburgh festivals in August, but like the diverse program offered at the Art Festival, the places are just as intriguing.

Edinburgh is full of hidden gems and places to explore slightly off the beaten track, and the Edinburgh Art Festival is a great way to see the city while enjoying a wide range of great cultural expressions.

From classical music in churches converted to pop-up events in wildlife gardens, the art festival program is brimming with local and international talent and will have you reconsider what art can be.

“Festivals provide a safe space for people to explore and experience new things and people navigate a festival with an element of surprise. This gives us a great opportunity to help people visit galleries and explore our programs that don’t normally do it. “

Edinburgh International Festival:

While for many who visit Edinburgh in August, a show is a show, anyone familiar with the history of festivals can tell you that the Edinburgh International Festival was the original festival, with the Fringe growing alongside to host artists who also wanted to perform in Edinburgh.

The program of the Edinburgh International Festival is truly exceptional in its diversity and, like the more contemporary shows, traditional pieces such as The Prisoner at The Lyceum and La Cenerentola by Opera de Lyon were just as exceptional.

Like the Edinburgh International Festival, the distribution of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo seems to be growing. With over 1000 artists from Scotland, the UK and around the world, this is a truly international spectacle.

The visit to China comes as the Tattoo revealed its intention to continue growing the company. Reaching an ever wider audience at home and abroad through an ambitious international expansion program, including a visit to China in 2020.

Stevie Small:

Project Officer, Stevie Small stated: The popular appeal of pipes and drums has never been stronger, both to appreciate the music and the considerable talent of the bagpipes, drums and traditional dance here in Scotland and abroad.

The central aim to introducing the group was to train drums, piping, Highland dancing and violin capacity to a level that can not only attract excellence skills for Edinburgh tattooing, but also for occasions that offer our young members once – unique opportunities to improve their skills and exposure in the world of piping.

Equally with every art form, it is essential that we always inspire the next generation to climb the ladder. The opportunities this presents are enormous, from international tours and of course performing at the famous Edinburgh Tattoo in August. are delighted to meet the new recruits.

Royal Highland Show:

The current members of Pipers Trail ended their world tour in their territory by participating in the President’s walk at the Royal Highland Show. The President’s March is a procession of musicians taking place in the world-famous Main Ring in Ingliston Park.

It recalls the regions where the agricultural fair would have been organized in previous years and marks the last tribute of the current president who leaves his post in front of 2,000 spectators.
